Many people catch 3 or 4 (or sometimes even more!) colds a year and think this is normal. However in reality this number of colds in a year is far from the norm. So what lies behind these high levels of illness?
Having a below par immune system leaves us open to being “invaded” by either viruses or bacteria that then create illness. The stronger our immune system the more we can move through the world and stay free from infections. So how do we go about building up our immunity?
Step one is Stress reduction. The immune system, like the digestive system is massively influenced by stress and the stress chemicals that we produce. This is because these chemicals are designed to shut the immune system down.
The stress response is very old. It dates back millions of years and is designed to protect us from external threats. This means that when we are going though a stress reaction the body decides that if we are in danger, why worry about fighting infections? The danger of the immediate moment takes precedence. This means that chronic stress plays a major role in having a depleted immune system.
Step two is Diet. Poor nutrition is a major factor in having lowered immunity. Too much sugar and low levels of fruit and vegetables are going to create an immune imbalance. Two very effective natural remedies for immunity are Echinacea and Beta Glucans.
Step three is Exercise. Exercise is part and parcel of the human condition. We are made to move! A lack pf physical exercise leads to a weakening of the immune system. Remember that too much exercise is a form of stress and will then have a negative effect on our immunity. Get the balance right. 3 or 4 sessions about 30 minutes a week should be enough. Or if you don’t have time for that then the Tabata system may be what you need.
Tabata interval workouts are all the rage these days, and for good reason. This high-intensity training is fun, blasts calories, and moves so quickly that it’s hard to get bored. For Tabata, you perform an exercise at maximal intensity for 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest. You repeat this on-off pattern a total of eight times, making one complete Tabata round four minutes.
The final step is to Sleep well. Whilst we sleep the body goes into heal and repair mode. If our sleep is poor then it creates an additional stress on the whole organism which will then weaken immunity.
So here’s the formula for optimizing your immunity:
– Reduce stress
– Eat well
– Sleep well
