Millions of pounds are spent every year on various pills and potions that claim to help our bodies to lose excess body fat. Yet how many of these weight loss aids really help? The answer is very few!
Losing weight is not a complex issue but for many people it can be very difficult. So what is the reality of weight loss? Part of the problem is people do not want to face the truth. Apart from a few people who have a hormonal issue if a person is overweight they eat too much and exercise too little.
The problem with eating is we often underestimate how many calories we are consuming and often ignore the source of these calories. Our diets have become saturated with an excess of starchy carbohydrates and sugar. Sugar is added (often in very large amounts) to many foods and drinks. Sugar in excess creates a problem as it triggers the body’s hormonal system to store fat.
Too many calories are a problem but so are too few! Calories restriction needs to be balanced if it is not to create a negative effect on the body. When calories are reduced too much the body slows down the metabolism as a means of compensation. This is why people put weight back on when they go back to a more normal diet.
Over the years many different diet theories have appeared and then often disappeared. Most of have been too gimmicky to have any useful long term results. In fact it is estimated that only about 5% of people succeed in losing weight and keeping it lost.
Success comes from balance. Slow is best! Cutting back 200-250 calories a day and doing some exercise 3 times a week is the best way. You won’t lose weight very fast, probably only about a pound every two weeks. However that equals nearly 2 stone or 12 kilos of fat!
So what about supplements? What works? The single most effective natural aid to weight loss is green tea. Numerous well documented studies have shown that green tea can play a quite significant role as a weight loss aid. The active ingredients in green tea called catechins are believed to be the reason it increases the metabolism. You need to take a minimum of 6oomg of catechins a day to create a fat burning effect.
Another useful product that really helps with weight loss is called HCA or Garcinia Cambogia. In trials it has been shown to reduce bodyweight and BMI by over 5% in an week period. So although most of the weight loss products currently being sold are largely ineffective, a small number can play a role in achieving a more toned body.
